Cavity Filling in Vista

Drill-Free Cavity Care for Vista Families Since 1993

At Sycamore Dental, we’ve been treating cavities for Vista and North San Diego County patients since 1993. Dr. Jon Englert and Dr. Gita Sarkaria-Englert lead a practice built around a simple idea: cavity treatment shouldn’t be something patients dread. We use the Solea CO2 dental laser to prepare cavities without a drill, and in 95% of routine procedures, without an anesthesia injection. Patients leave with a full, natural bite and can often go straight to lunch or back to work.

Timing matters with cavities. Decay caught early can be treated with a simple composite filling. Left alone, it can reach the pulp and require a root canal or, in severe cases, extraction. We treat patients from their first tooth through their senior years, and our bilingual Spanish-speaking team serves Vista’s Spanish-speaking families directly. We accept most insurance plans and offer CareCredit financing.

The Solea CO2 Laser: Cavity Prep Without the Drill

Solea is the first FDA-cleared CO2 dental laser designed for both hard- and soft-tissue procedures. Developed through research at the University of California School of Dentistry and manufactured by Convergent Dental, it operates at a precise wavelength of 9.3 microns that lets it remove decayed enamel and dentin with virtually no vibration, no drill noise, and no heat buildup in surrounding tissue.

For most patients, that combination can eliminate the need for a numbing injection. In 95% of routine cases at our practice, Solea is used without anesthesia. Because there’s no numbness to wear off, many patients can eat normally and return to their day right after the appointment. Solea also makes it practical to treat multiple areas in a single visit, a technique called multi-quadrant dentistry, which means fewer appointments for patients who have decay in more than one area.

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people delay cavity treatment, and the drill is often the trigger. The absence of vibration and noise can remove much of what patients dread. Anesthesia is still available for anyone who wants it, but most patients find they don’t need it.

What to Expect at Your Filling Appointment

Your appointment begins with a thorough examination. We use the DIAGNOdent laser fluorescence pen to detect decay in deep pits and fissures that don’t always show up on standard X-rays, so we can identify and treat cavities at an earlier stage before they grow. Once we’ve mapped all areas of concern, we walk you through the treatment plan before anything begins.

During the procedure, the Solea laser removes the decayed material cleanly and precisely. We then place a tooth-colored composite filling, shade-matched to your natural tooth, so the restoration is virtually undetectable. The filling is shaped and polished to fit your bite naturally. Local anesthesia is available for patients who need it, even with laser-assisted preparation.

After the appointment, we provide detailed aftercare instructions. Any post-procedure sensitivity, if it occurs, often resolves within a few days. We schedule follow-up visits to monitor the restoration and adjust bite alignment if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cavity Filling

How Long Does a Cavity Filling Last?

It depends on the material. Composite fillings, used for their natural appearance, typically last 5 to 7 years. Amalgam fillings generally last 10 to 15 years. Brushing twice daily, flossing, and keeping up with regular checkups all help support the life of a filling.

What Are the Signs That I Might Need a Cavity Filling?

Common indicators include tooth sensitivity to hot or cold, visible holes or pits in your teeth, tooth pain, and dark spots on the enamel. Many cavities produce no symptoms at all in the early stages, which is why regular checkups every six months matter. Early detection can mean simpler treatment.

Will the Filling Match the Color of My Tooth?

Yes. Tooth-colored composite fillings are shade-matched to your natural teeth and are virtually undetectable once placed.

Are There Any Risks Associated With Cavity Fillings?

Fillings are generally safe and well-tolerated. Potential risks include temporary sensitivity after the procedure, rare allergic reactions to materials, and occasional bite misalignment after placement. Misalignment can typically be corrected at a follow-up visit. Talk with your dentist about any concerns before treatment begins.

Do I Still Need Anesthesia With the Solea Laser?

At Sycamore Dental, 95% of routine cavity procedures are completed without anesthesia when using the Solea laser. Anesthesia is available for patients who prefer it or whose case requires it. You can discuss what to expect at your specific appointment when you call or come in.

How Do I Prepare for a Cavity Filling Appointment?

Preparation is straightforward. Avoid heavy or sticky meals before your appointment, brush and floss beforehand, and let your dentist know about any medical conditions, allergies, or medications. That’s it.
